It's that time again! For the fifth year running, we're celebrating the snubbed and overlooked, the too commercial or not commercial enough, with Digital Spy's alternative Oscars.

Many great movies missed out on an Academy Awards nomination in 2016, so read on below to see who we think are the best of the rest.

BEST PICTURE

Straight Outta Compton

Creed

Carol

What to Read Next

Inside Out

45 Years

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Fast & Furious 7

It Follows

And the alternative Oscar goes to… INSIDE OUT

Video poster

When animation is as intelligent as Inside Out, it deserves better than to be consigned to the Best Animated Film ghetto and then ignored in the Best Picture race. This is the most psychologically complicated, profoundly human film of the year, and it's time to look past the small, brightly coloured characters.

Still, an honourable mention to the old-fashioned drama of Creed and Carol, the underplayed subtlety of 45 Years and the brilliant bombast of Star Wars and Fast & Furious 7.

BEST DIRECTOR

Ryan Coogler, Creed

Todd Haynes, Carol

Pete Docter, Inside Out

J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens

David Robert Mitchell, It Follows

And the alternative Oscar goes to… Ryan Coogler, Creed

Video poster

It's time to start acknowledging the next generation of directors instead of rewarding the same old faces over and over again. Coogler's work on Creed builds on the promise of his storming debut, Fruitvale Station, and establishes him as one of America's most promising young directors. An Oscar would cement the fact that he has options beyond blockbusters; his next film is Marvel's much-anticipated Black Panther.

BEST ACTOR

Michael B. Jordan, Creed

Jacob Tremblay, Room

O'Shea Jackson Jr., Straight Outta Compton

Will Smith, Concussion

Samuel L. Jackson, The Hateful Eight

And the alternative Oscar goes to… SAMUEL L. JACKSON

Video poster

Michael B. Jordan almost pipped it for Creed, but he gets penalty points for making Fantastic Four this year. Instead, Samuel L. Jackson, who unbelievably still does not have an Oscar, finally gets his due as far as we're concerned. In advance of The Hateful Eight, it looked like Kurt Russell was the lead – but when we saw the film, Jackson took it and ran away with it.

BEST ACTRESS

Rooney Mara, Carol

Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl

Charlize Theron, Mad Max: Fury Road

Emily Blunt, Sicario

Lily Tomlin, Grandma

And the alternative Oscar goes to… ROONEY MARA

Video poster

Unlike SOME awards shows, we can tell the difference between a lead and a supporting performance, and Mara is definitely the lead in Carol. The film is largely told from her perspective, for crying out loud! But there is every chance that, if Charlize Theron turns up on the night in her Furiosa leathers, we could be intimidated into giving it to her instead.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Adam Driver, Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Oscar Isaac, Ex Machina

Jason Siegel, The End Of The Tour

Idris Elba, Beasts Of No Nation

Dwayne Johnson, Fast & Furious 7

And the alternative Oscar goes to… ADAM DRIVER

Video poster

Let's be honest: we've nominated The Rock because he flexed off the cast on his broken arm, picked up a mini-gun and shot down a drone in the year's funniest action scene. And Isaac gets a nod mostly for his dancing. But the real winner here is Adam Driver, bringing unexpected complexity and nuance to a Star Wars villain – and that's something we had never seen before.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Tessa Thompson, Creed

Rachel Weisz, The Lobster

Mya Taylor, Tangerine

Marion Cotillard, Macbeth

Julianne Moore, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II

And the alternative Oscar goes to… TESSA THOMPSON

Fierce, fearless and facing deafness that will end her music career, Tessa Thompson's Bianca is the perfect foil to Michael B. Jordan's Donny in Creed. Unlike the 'girlfriend' character in most of these films, Bianca has her own concerns and own inner life – and while she supports Creed, she's often more driven and possibly more talented than he is. That's a great message for any supporting female character.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

'Love Me Like You Do', Fifty Shades Of Grey

'Flashlight', Pitch Perfect 2

'Feel The Light', Home

'See You Again', Fast & Furious 7

'Story To Tell', He Named Me Malala

And the alternative Oscar goes to… FLASHLIGHT

Video poster

Hardly anyone saw documentary He Named Me Malala, and Home disappeared at the box office (it's actually rather charming! And 'Feel The Light' is a good song!). Fifty Shades fans are too tied up to vote. 'See You Again' may have more than 1 billion YouTube views, but 'Flashlight' sneaks in and makes off with the prize. You just know that Rebel Wilson is going to muscle in and take over the acceptance speech somehow, which will make for great TV.
