Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead takes the top spot as the fan favourite movie of the 2022 Academy Awards. This doesn't come as much of a surprise, given how powerful of a fanbase the Zack Snyder fans are.

The current school of thought on Snyder's win for Army of the Dead, Netflix's biggest film of 2021, was that the fanbase were rallying around Snyder rather than the movie itself, as his cut of Justice League was ineligible for the "award".

The Oscars Fan Favourite rules state: "An entrant's Favourite Movie can be any of the eligible movies for The 94th Academy Awards – all movies are displayed on the Oscars website. Home movies or films which are/were not eligible CANNOT be used as Favourite Movie."

This is because Snyder's Justice League was not a new movie within the eligibility category, but rather a re-cut of an existing film – the Joss Whedon version from 2017.

While many have derided the new category, it is clear that while the fan voting certainly has some merit, it is not an Oscar.

The films up for voting were selected by fans on Twitter or on the Academy's official website. Fans were able to vote up to 20 times each day, which meant the system would be easy to game for those with plenty of time on their hands.

The list of eligible films included The Addams Family 2, Belfast, Candyman, Cruella, Cyrano, House of Gucci, and many more. Zack Snyder's four-hour Justice League received a large amount of votes in the first stages of the contest, announced on February 14, prior to it being deemed ineligible.

Some suspected that Johnny Depp fans would rally around Minamata (which came in third) in a similar campaign, or that Cinderella would take the top spot. However, it's safe never to underestimate the Zack Snyder fanbase.

Army of the Dead takes place in a post-zombie apocalypse Las Vegas, where a group of mercenaries led by Dave Bautista break into a city ruled by Zombies in order to pull off an impossible heist. There is already a sequel in the works.

Zack Snyder's Justice League is out now on HBO Max in the US, and Sky Cinema and NOW in the UK.
