Lin-Manuel Miranda on why Encanto's Bruno song won't win an Oscar

Lin-Manuel Miranda has opened up about the one beloved Encanto song that will be missing from this year's Oscars.

With the release of the Disney movie and its mesmerising soundtrack, one particular hit seemed to immediately capture the hearts of audiences everywhere.

'We Don't Talk About Bruno' has quickly climbed up the charts, claiming the No.1 spot in the UK for the past three weeks and even securing a spot at the top of US Billboard Hot 100.

Speaking on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote eight original songs for the soundtrack, backed the decision to nominate 'Dos Oruguitas' instead – for its connection to the movie's spirit.

Danielle Monaro, one of the presenters on the show, was the first one to question the decision.

"You didn't submit 'We Don't Talk About Bruno'," she said. "Are you kicking yourself or are we kicking someone else?"

"We aren't kicking anybody," Miranda laughed. "We're kicking ourselves with happiness that people like the songs! I mean no one could have predicted the success of the soundtrack, much less that Bruno was going to be the one that popped off.

"You know, when you submit a song for [Oscar] consideration I always think… it's not about whether you win or not, it's about the one that best exemplifies the spirit of the movie itself. That's always the guiding principle.

"And for us, 'Dos Oruguitas'… It's the foundational story and it's a song I'm really proud of. It's like one of the only songs I've ever written that made my wife cry and so I'm really proud to enter that into consideration."

Encanto follows the young Mirabel Madrigal (voiced by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz), who seems to be the only member of her family that doesn't possess a magical gift.

But when her family members start to mysteriously lose their magic, she realises she might have to be the one to save them.

The movie was an immediate hit with audiences and Miranda still seems overwhelmed by the success of the soundtrack.

"You know, 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' is this wild one-hit wonder," he continued. 'Well, not one-hit wonder, there's six songs on the chart! It's so crazy! The fact that people have embraced the entire soundtrack is really rare and amazing."

"And No.1 again this week, it's beating Frozen and… you beat 'When You Wish Upon a Star'? Oh, there's a place in hell for people like you that do that," joked presenter Elvis Duran. "That's fabulous!"
