Parasite has triumphed over Joker, The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time with the most Oscars 2020 wins.

The acclaimed South Korean film made history during this year's hostless ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday night (February 9), when it became the first film from its country to win an Academy Award.

In clinching the Best Picture Award, Parasite is also the first non-English language movie to ever win that prestigious prize.

Parasite's crowning Best Picture moment did come with some controversy as organisers attempted to bring the curtain down on its winning team while they were still speaking.

It was only after the star-studded crowd, including the likes of Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt, chanted "raise it" that the curtain was raised so the South Korean thriller's production team could finish speaking.

"Some say never meet your heroes," Dern said in her own speech. "I say if you're really blessed, you get them as your parents. I share this with my acting hero my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. You got game. I love you."

Joker had the advantage going into Sunday's Academy Awards with an impressive 11 nominations in total, just ahead of the 10 nods received by The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Joker ultimately won two awards.

Like in 2019, Oscars bosses chose not to have a traditional host for this year's ceremony, instead using comedy stars Chris Rock, Steve Martin, Will Ferrell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig to appear in their own segments throughout the show.

The 92nd Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 9.
