William Shatner has clarified that he has not yet formally agreed to appear in Star Trek 3.

Shatner confirmed in September that he had been approached to reprise his role as Captain Kirk in director Roberto Orci's sequel, with rumours later suggesting that a deal had been reached.

The actor - who starred in the original Star Trek series and seven feature films - has now clarified that talks remain ongoing about his involvement in Star Trek 3.

"I had a talk with [Orci] the other day," Shatner told The AP.

He added: "So there's talk - simply talk - about the next movie."

Shatner explained that he will only sign on for "a role that had something to do with the turning of the plot", but admitted that he is unsure of how Captain Kirk could return given his death in Star Trek Generations.

"That was so long ago. How do they bring me back physically like this? I don't know," he said.

Director JJ Abrams's two previous films have included original Star Trek cast member Leonard Nimoy reprising his role as Spock Prime alongside alternative universe versions of Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Quinto).

Shatner recently joked that Chris Pine's portrayal of Kirk reminds him of his mortality.

Star Trek 3 will be released in 2016.
