The best actors don't break character at any point during a scene – even when they've just done themselves some serious damage. Here are the hardcore thesps suffering for their art.

Brad Pitt in Se7en

While filming a chase scene in the rain, Pitt slammed his hand through a window and caused serious tendon damage to his hand. It was so severe the script had to be rewritten to work his injury into the storyline, which is why he's wearing a sling.

Nobody makes Channing Tatum bleed his own blood. Except Channing Tatum! When the actor smashes his face into a hotel mirror, the force of his actions managed to crack the mirror and cut him – despite being coated with safety plastic. Word on the set is he also damaged the wall behind it. That's SO Channing.

Critics suggested Nicole Kidman's dancing was below par in Baz Luhrman's movie but the actress hit back with news that she had broken a rib and torn the cartilage in her knee during filming. The damage to her knee was so severe she had to film some scenes sitting down so the camera wouldn't see her leg brace.

What is it with actors and mirrors? A bathroom scene in this high-octane thriller about paparazzi in LA sees a frustrated Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) punch a mirror. Much like Tatum's, it wasn't supposed to break but that's still Gyllenhaal's real blood in the movie and he had to go to hospital to deal with the cut.

Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained

During a powerful scene at the Candyland ranch, Leonardo DiCaprio was supposed to thump his hand on the table. The version that makes it into the film sees the actor break a glass when he performs this move – that's DiCaprio's real blood from the cut caused by this smash, left in there by Quentin Tarantino.

Daryl Hannah chipped her elbow in eight places and still has a scar following an accident on the set of Ridley Scott's science fiction classic. Moving quickly on the rain-soaked ground as she runs away from Sebastian, Hannah fell and put her elbow through a car window.

Christopher Guest was armed with a real sword but Cary Elwes eventually convinced him into using the pommel to give him a 'gentle' tap on the head. Elwes was knocked unconscious for real and woke up in the hospital with stitches being sown into his head but that take was good enough to make it into the film.

Sometimes the effects look so good you can't tell that they're not real. And sometimes that's the actor's real blood falling from their face. In Patriot Games, it's the latter. When Harrison Ford swings a boat hook at Sean Bean in the final fight, it actually hits him in the head, causing a permanent scar.

As her arm twisted, it broke, with RDJ immediately stopping when he heard the pop. Production was postponed for eight weeks while she healed and the pair remain good friends today.

There's a moment in the second Lord of the Rings movie where Aragorn thinks Merry and Pippin are dead, their bodies burned. Viggo Mortensen really shows his emotions as he boots his helmet and lets out a cry. While we think he's a great actor, the power he brings to that scene probably also had something to do with the fact that he broke two toes kicking the head gear.

Sometimes the best take happens to be the one that dealt the unexpected blow and that was the case for this 1936 movie. The beautiful dress Ginger Rogers was wearing also came with beaded sections that Astaire claimed "must have weighed a few pounds each". When they slapped him in the face during the first take of the number 'Let's Face the Music and Dance', they injured his cheek and eye and left him "somewhat maimed." Ouch.

You don't mess with the Corleones! Sonny (James Caan) is supposed to give Carlos Rizzi (Gianni Russo) a brutal beating but when Caan attacked Russo with a trash can, he broke the actor's ribs and shattered his elbow for real.
