After several years of playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe's resident trickster and God of Mischief Loki, it seems like Tom Hiddleston has learned a trick or two himself and is more than happy to use them to wind up his fans just a little bit.

The actor posted a minute-long video on his Twitter page yesterday (November 14) that contained no speaking, no caption and no explanation.

In the clip, Hiddleston can be seen walking up a graffiti-covered underpass before stopping to look at something as the music kicks in. He comes close to shedding a few tears before the word 'Betrayal' appears at the end.

Needless to say, his followers found the whole thing rather cryptic and demanded answers:

Of course, it wasn't long before people clocked that Betrayal is the name of a 1978 play by Harold Pinter and fans started speculating that Hiddleston was working on something to do with that – before The Harold Pinter Theatre put us all out of our misery.

"We are so excited to announce @twhiddleston is joining [The Jamie Lloyd Company's] Pinter at the Pinter Season!" the theatre wrote on Instagram, alongside a poster of Tom.

In the comments, the theatre also confirmed that Tom will be appearing for a limited 12-week run from March 5, 2019 with tickets going on sale on Friday, November 30.

Betrayal charts a compelling seven-year romance, told in reverse chronological order. So far Hiddleston is the only confirmed cast member, with more casting announcements coming in due course.

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that a Loki TV spin-off is in development for new streaming platform Disney+, with Hiddleston due to reprise his MCU role.

The actor used his Twitter account to whip fans up into a frenzy over that news too, tweeting following the announcement to say: "Loki. More stories to tell. More mischief to make. More to come."
