Disney has some big plans for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but those plans might not include Johnny Depp.
More than a year after Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge underperformed as the film series' second-lowest grossing instalment, Deadline is reporting that Disney is now considering a reboot.
The studio is in negotiations with Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese to work on a brand-new concept for the movies based on its classic Disneyland attraction.
Wernick and Reese are among the busiest writers in Hollywood, having just finished the long-awaited Zombieland Too and partnered with Michael Bay on his Netflix movie Six Underground.
Bay also produces the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and is still on board for the proposed reboot. What's not clear, according to Deadline, is whether Depp will be reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Since the release of Salazar's Revenge, Depp has taken on an even bigger role in the Fantastic Beasts franchise as the dark wizard Grindelwald. There's every possibility he could be tied up with several of those sequels.

In spite of Salazar's Revenge underperforming at the box office last year, Michael Bay later said that there was still a possibility of another proper sequel with Depp happening.
"Well, I hope we can continue to make it, but you know we've been having so much fun just promoting this one right now that we'll just have to wait and see," he explained. "Hopefully it's very successful on DVD as the other ones have been. Then hopefully we'll sit down and see where we go."
Apparently, plans changed once Bay finally did sit down with Disney.
