It's taken ten years to get here, but the Highlander reboot is finally preparing to start shooting.

Deadline reports that the script, from Colony writer Ryan Condal, has been delivered to Lionsgate, who are looking to start filming later this year to make a 2019 release.

Patrick Wachsberger, the head of Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group, tells the publication that: "We've finally got a screenplay we're happy with.

"We have set up the story so it has sequel potential."

And now it makes sense when the studio didn't bin the project after years of development hell: they want a franchise. Let's hope that each movie doesn't take a decade plus to release.

Digital Spy spoke exclusively last year to Chad Stahelski, who directed the popular John Wick and is set to helm this project, and he said that: "I love the original, I know it's dated in certain ways but I love the vibe and the mythology.

What to Read Next

"So, my take on it would be to somehow maintain the vibe and mythology and feeling of the first movie. Not go off the rails with too much plot, and really develop the world of the immortals.

"I don't care what the mortals are doing, I want to be invested in the immortal world and hold true to the original as much as I can."

Various directors have been attached to the project over its lifespan, while names like Ryan Reynolds and Tom Cruise were bandied about at various points.

Most recently, Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista was linked to the film. That was in 2015 though, so we'll have to see whether that is still the case as casting announcements are made throughout the year.
