Avengers: Infinity War's director have teased a "radical transformation" for Thor in the upcoming mega-watt superhero sequel.

Warning, spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok ahead.

We've already seen the character undergo some drastic changes, including losing an eye and gaining a patch for it in Ragnarok.

The Thoreequel also hammered home his sense of humour – with Chris Hemsworth coining some of the jokes himself – and of most shocking of all, he cut his hair.

Now Infinity War's directing duo the Russo Brothers have teased even more changes for the character in Marvel's massive superhero mash-up.

Speaking in a YouTube Q&A, Anthony Russo said: "We're picking up his story from the end of Thor: Ragnarok. At the end of that film his home planet, Asgard, is destroyed. So the character is in new territory, because his past has been torn away from him to a degree.

"I think that was very similar to Captain America's situation when we picked up his story in Winter Soldier. Cap was in a place when we were very much catching him up in the modern world, and seeing what that meant to him, and figuring out how you move a character that far forward, and that far away from where they started back during the '40s.

"We have similar opportunities with [Thor] in this movie. He's gone through a radical transformation, and he's moving forward in a way where he could never go back. That's always a fun place to be with a character as a storyteller."

So what could these dramatic changes be? Well, as comic fans will know, Thor's mantle has been taken over by a woman in the comics – and the demand for more female-led Marvel movies could mean she'll make her way into the MCU.

This could potentially spell the end for Chris Hemsworth's Thor. After all, this will be the sixth time the actor has played the God of Thunder (including his Doctor Strange cameo and Avengers work) and that's not even counting his various comedic short films.

Plus there's the circulating rumours that some major character are going to get well and truly smushed by Thanos, before being avenged in Avengers 4.

Elsewhere the movie's big bad, Thanos had his original name revealed and it's hilariously unintimidating. Also, the movie could see even more clashes between Iron Man and Captain America.

Avengers: Infinity War will be released on April 27, 2018 in the UK, and then debuts in the US on May 4, 2018.
