For those of you who were intrigued by the news that Scarface was about to get the Suicide Squad treatment, it ain't going to happen – director David Ayer has reportedly left the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal and Ayer have parted ways after disagreeing over the director's intended take on the script.

It was revealed back in May that Ayer would be overseeing Universal's remake of Brian De Palma's iconic drama about an immigrant who rises to the top of the crime world.

But despite Scarface not exactly being the most lighthearted of movies, it's alleged that Ayer's take on the script was "too dark" for studio bosses.

So no, we won't be seeing an inked up Tony Montana any time soon.

Not that Ayer would have necessarily taken the remake to the realms of Suicide Squad anyway – after all, he has since admitted he'd do the film differently if he had the chance.

"I know it's a controversial film," he tweeted earlier this year. "I really tried to make something different, with a look and a voice of its own.

"If you set out to make a mass appeal movie, it's easy to end up with vanilla. But I went for it. And I know Squad has its flaws. Hell, the world knows it."

You can say that again.
