John Boyega is a real chip off the old block in his latest preview of Pacific Rim: Uprising.

The Star Wars actor is gearing up to play the son of Idris Elba's war hero Stacker Pentecost in the upcoming sequel, so it makes sense for him to rehearse some of Idris's trademark brooding in a new photo.

Boyega and newcomer Scott Eastwood will pitch in with our returning Pacific Rim favourites Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman to once again battle those nasty monsters we call Kaiju.

Although the original movie's director Guillermo del Toro is only producing Uprising, he has let Digital Spy in on how the Jaegers will be bulking up for round two with the monster hordes.

"We're going a very different route [for Pacific Rim 2]," del Toro added.

"Pacific Rim had what I used to call 'Gothic tech' - the storm, the rain, it was very tempestuous [and] atmospheric - and [Pacific Rim 2] has a lot more daylight, for example.

"I cannot say what, but we have elements that are different. You still get kaiju, you still get mecha, and then you'll get... a few new things."

Intriguing! Guillermo del Toro has handed over reigns for the sequel to Spartacus and Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Steven S DeKnight, so we're probably in safe hands.

Pacific Rim: Uprising will storm into cinemas on February 23, 2018 in the UK and the US.
