There were whisperings of it, but now it's been confirmed by the man himself (well, kind of): James Franco will be starring in the upcoming Alien: Covenant.

In an interview with HeyUGuys, James tried his hardest to keep the news under wraps before eventually giving in.

"The news is out, I guess?" he tentatively asked. Yes, James. Pretty much.

When asked if he was looking forward to being part of such an iconic franchise, Franco admitted it was "great".

"I remember when I was a kid watching Alien for the first time, and that was huge," he said. "I just watched it in the past month... it's such a good movie.

"It's so, so tight, full of tension - really just a horror movie in space."

Rumour has it that Franco is lined up to play captain of the spaceship Covenant and husband of Katherine Waterston's character Daniels. So, yep, he's probably going to die.

But when one actor loses a role, another gains one. Or two, in the case of Michael Fassbender.

The Fass will be reprising his brilliantly sinister role of David the android from Prometheus, as well as taking on another new robot named Walter.

Praising director Ridley Scott as a "machine", Fassbender also revealed that Covenant will be heading back to the anthology's horror roots.

"I think what's great about [Alien: Covenant] is that Ridley has gone back to the original DNA of Alien, the horror element of that," Fassbender said. "But it also has the scope and scale of Prometheus."
