It seems that the upcoming Tomb Raider movie will definitely be based on the two latest games: the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and the more recent Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Producer Graham King has confirmed to to HeyUGuys that the Alicia Vikander-starring film will be focused on the more recent titles.

"Well this is kind of what we call a 'back to the roots story'," explained King. "This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that's what Alicia found so interesting about it.

"I think the storytelling is really good and I think we've got the right crew and a great director and I think it's going to be really fun making a film like this."

Earlier this year it was confirmed that Vikander - of Ex Machina, Jason Bourne and The Danish Girl fame - would star as Lara Croft in the new movie.

The Oscar-winning actress revealed that she was "hoping [they] can do something fresh and new" with the movie, especially as it's been 13 years since Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider films.

"This is quite a different take on it," Vikander added to Digital Spy.

Director Roar Uthaug also wants to take the story in a similar direction to what Crystal Dynamics has done with the rebooted game series.

"I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that's definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well," Uthaug told IGN at the time.

"I think we'll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I'm hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise."
