Far be it from us or Ben Affleck to accuse blockbuster movies of being predictable, paint-by-numbers affairs.
But whatever the case, Affleck has revealed that the unpredictable plot of his new blockbuster The Accountant is what attracted him to the film.
What to Read Next
"That was what kind of drew me originally to the project - I was just surprised by the plot turns and surprised what the character developments were," he told Digital Spy.
"That's not a very common thing. Usually you've read the script and you can more or less figure out what's going to happen on page 90 by the time you're on page 15. This was fresh and different and new."
He also acknowledged the similarity between his character Chris Wolff and another high profile role he debuted this year.
"Those are the only movies I want to do," he joked. "I just look for that template, then sign me up."
His co-star, Anna Kendrick, also enjoyed the atypical direction in which director Gavin O'Connor took their characters.
"I found it so sweet these two characters were trying their best to be open and make connections - and just failing miserably," she said.
The film centres around an autistic mathematical genius who, while helping criminals fix their books, (inevitably) finds himself caught up in a violent conflict with the authorities.
J K Simmons, Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Tambor and John Lithgow also star in the film.
The Accountant is out now in the US and opens in the UK on November 4.
