Channing Tatum is diving into an unexpected role in Disney's remake of Splash.

The Magic Mike actor will lead the cast as the merman, opposite his 22 Jump Street co-star Jillian Bell, as the remake does a Ghostbusters and swaps the genders of the main characters. We imagine it will look something like this, but with fewer legs:

In the original Ron Howard and Brian Grazer film, Tom Hanks starred as the mortal man who was rescued from drowning as a boy by mermaid Daryl Hannah.

The pair then of course fell in love in the 1984 romantic comedy.

Howard and Grazer are also on board for this remake (via Variety) which will see Bell as the young girl saved by Tatum's sea-dweller.

Maria Lewis-Ryan is penning the script for Disney, who are in negotiations with Howard and Grazer's Imagine Entertainment.
