With Ridley Scott's prequel Alien: Covenant currently shooting and cruising for an August 2017 release, talk of Neill Blomkamp's sequel has quietened down a bit.

But now, franchise star Sigourney Weaver has revealed some additional details to EW.

Apparently, this sequel is going to bypass David Fincher's Alien 3 and Jean Pierre Jeunet's Alien: Resurrection and carry on the story after Aliens.

"It's just as if, you know, the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to Neill's movie," she explained.

There's no indication yet of when the film might move into pre-production.

For now, only Weaver and Michael Biehn are said to be on board, and there's no news as to whether there could be scope for an appearance from Carrie Henn, who played Newt.

What to Read Next

After Aliens, Henn chose not to pursue acting (and instead became a teacher), though this year she's attached to a sci-fi thriller called Triborn - her first film since Aliens - so it might not be out of the question.

Aliens turns 30 this year and the cast will be reuniting at San Diego Comic-Con - we'll keep an ear out for further announcement there.
