Cate Blanchett is going blockbuster with Thor: Ragnarok.

Although she's known for her award-winning roles in movies such as Carol, Blue Jasmine and The Aviator, the two-time Oscar winner seemed excited to be going into uncharted territory.

If the rumours are true, she'll be playing the villain Hela in the superhero movie, and she explained why she was looking forward to the experience.

"I've only done action a couple of times, so it feels like - a departure is too strong a word, but it certainly seems like a change for me," she told a South Korean publication (via CinemaBlend).

"So, I am looking forward to getting really fit and wearing lycra, and hoping to earn a bit of street cred from my kids. I can't wait."

Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, with Mark Ruffalo on board to play Bruce Banner / The Hulk.

The sequel will be directed by Taika Waititi, and has been scheduled for a late 2017 release.
