Dad's Army star Toby Jones says it was a "tricky balance" updating the classic wartime TV show for modern audiences while maintaining the spirit of the original.

"A lot of thought went into honouring the original while trying to turn it into a successful movie," he told Digital Spy, explaining that remaining "true to the 25-minute format, but giving it enough scale to make an 120-minute movie" was no easy feat.

"That's the tricky balance we all had, because the characters have to exist in more worlds than they did on the TV show."

The rebooted Dad's Army, also starring Catherine Zeta Jones, Bill Nighy and Michael Gambon, follows another WW2 related role for Jones – the evil Red Skull scientist Arnim Zola, in Marvel's Captain America series.

Having played WW2 goodies and baddies, the 49-year-old says it's marginally more fun being on the sides of the allies.

"If I had to pick... Captain Mainwaring's fantastic. They're different genres of course. I do love playing Arnim Zola. I'll say Mainwaring today, but it could change tomorrow."

They foil the Nazis in Dad's Army – could Mainwaring's men defeat the Red Skull in a Captain America crossover?

"Absolutely no way," says Jones. "Arnim Zola's got a brain the size of a planet."

Dad's Army is in cinemas from Friday (February 5).
