Don't expect to see Sir Anthony Hopkins cooking up his neighbours as Hannibal Lecter on the big screen again.

The 78-year-old actor has candidly admitted that he regrets making Hannibal and Red Dragon – the sequel and prequel to The Silence of the Lambs.

"I did it once. Made the mistake of doing it twice - three times," he told TheWrap. "The Silence of the Lambs is okay. It was a good film."

Academy voters seemingly thought that The Silence of the Lambs was better than just "okay" – having given Hopkins a Best Actor Oscar.

Asked whether he'd like to play Hannibal Lecter once more, Hopkins answered: "I don't want to do that. Done with that."

Hopkins is far from the only actor to put his stamp on the iconic baddie Hannibal Lecter.

Brian Cox and Gaspard Ulliel both played the serial killer on the big screen, while Mads Mikkelsen wrapped up a three-season run on TV series Hannibal last summer.
