Ryan Gosling's might be best known for his cool-as-ice roles in Drive and Crazy Stupid Love, but the A-lister steps behind the camera this week for his directorial debut Lost River.
The film boasts an all-star cast of Christina Hendricks, Iain De Caestecker, Eva Mendes and Saoirse Ronan while ex-Doctor Who Matt Smith makes his US film debut as the villainous Bully.
What to Read Next
Is Gosling a secret Whovian? Digital Spy asked him about this and more as we sat down to discuss his dark Detroit-set fairytale.
"I was writing and I heard his voice," he recalled of his first encounter with Smith.
"Doctor Who was on TV and he was doing a scene where he had a microphone and he was literally ruling the universe telling these spaceships how to it was going to be.
"I've never really seen anybody that looks like him or is like him. He's his own thing. I got really about working with him and I was so happy he came on to do the film."
For those of you are super-curious, the Who episode that inspired Gosling to cast Smith was 2010's 'The Pandorica Opens' (view a clip above).
Lost River opens in cinemas and on VOD today (April 10).
