Peter Hujar’s Day, the upcoming film starring Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall, has unveiled its first image.
The biopic, which sees Whishaw reunite with director Ira Sachs following their collaboration on Passages, tells the real-life story of photographer Peter Hujar and writer Lisa Rosenkrantz (Hall), who were influential in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s.
Ahead of the film’s world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January or February, the first image for the project has been released, with the photo showing Whishaw – who can currently be seen in Netflix’s Black Doves – in character.

“In recreating the recounting of Peter’s day to author Linda Rosenkrantz in her 94th Street apartment in New York City in 1974, director Ira Sachs playfully creates a wholly new work of contemporary cinema,” reads a description of the film.
“With a consciously self-aware style and actors Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall re-enacting the encounter with fidelity and elegance, Peter Hujar’s Day is an evocative experience rooted in a particular time and place, but it is also eternal in its recognition of the unstoppable flow of time.”

One of Whishaw’s other prominent roles was that of Q in the James Bond franchise, with the actor appearing in Skyfall, Spectre and No Time to Die. Following Daniel Craig’s departure from the series, the future of the series is unclear, though Whishaw stated he would be open to returning.
“I don't think I'm gonna be in the next one,” he told the BBC. “I think they're gonna start all over again with a completely new cast. That's my hunch. But I don't know - I have no idea. I'd do it if they asked me. I think it might need a new lease of life and a whole new group of people… But if they asked me, I would do it, of course.”
Peter Hujar's Day premieres at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
