Ever since she faced down the slobbering Xenomorph in Ridley Scott's 1979 space horror Alien, Sigourney Weaver has been cemented as a science fiction icon in the minds of movie fans.

In the years since, she reprised her role as Alien's Ellen Ripley on three separate occasions, starred in a pair of Ghostbusters movies and featured in genre trailblazer Avatar (the highest grossing film of all time).

Weaver's CV is also full of many more great sci-fi roles, including the villain in Paul, cult comedy Galaxy Quest and this week's robocomedy Chappie.

Digital Spy sat down with Weaver to talk through how she feels about being seen as a sci-fi icon, the marathon shoot for Avatar 2, 3 and 4, and the offer she made to Paul Feig to appear in Ghostbusters 3.

Chappie opens in cinemas on March 6.
