The idea for the film came from Daisy Ridley herself, and was later developed into a script by Tom Bateman.

The story starts by showing the strained marriage between stay-at-home mum Anette (Ridley) and author Ben (played by Star Trek: Discovery's Shazad Latif). When their daughter is cast in a film production, Ben takes it upon himself to be her guardian on set.

He doesn't do it out of parental responsibility, though, but as a way to meet movie star Alicia (Revenge's Matilda Lutz), who plays his daughter's mother in the production.

As Ben becomes obsessed with her and Alicia seems keen on his advances, Anette tries to unveil her partner's secrets.

Magpie landed a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (from 34 reviews) after its release, with critics mostly praising Ridley's outstanding performance.

The British actor has also received praise for recent works like Sometimes I Think About Dying, and Disney+'s biographical sports drama Young Woman and the Sea.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Ridley talked about the challenges of portraying real-life US Olympian Gertrude 'Trudy' Ederle in the movie, which included months of open-water swimming training.

"It gave me a tiny taste of what that might have felt like for her," she said. "And I'm not even close to what she did, but it really gave me an even greater respect for how overwhelming and terrifying that might have been, and how determined she might have been to complete it."

Magpie is now available to rent or buy on Amazon, iTunes and other digital retailers.
