Patrick Dempsey has landed his next lead movie role.

The Grey's Anatomy star is set to feature opposite Minnie Driver in The Household Guide to Dying, based on the book of the same name by Debra Adelaide.

According to Deadline, the movie is being directed by Emma-Kate Croghan, in what will be her first film in 25 years. Details on Dempsey and Driver's roles are yet to be revealed.

The official book synopsis teases a "moving" and "darkly comic" tale that centres on Delia, a 40-year-old writer who is given a terminal diagnosis and sees a new book opportunity.

"Delia has made a living writing a series of hugely successful modern household guides, as well as an acerbic domestic advice column," it reads. "She is preoccupied with how to prepare herself and her family for death, from writing exhaustive lists to teaching her young daughters how to make a perfect cup of tea.

"What she needs, more than anything, is a manual – exactly the kind she is the expert at writing. But, in the writing, Delia is forced to confront the ghosts of her past, and the events of fourteen years previously."

It's not the only role Dempsey has landed of late, with the Enchanted and Bridget Jones Baby star being cast in the Dexter prequel series Original Sin.

He'll play Aaron Spencer, the Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide department who has a long-standing relationship with Dexter's adoptive dad, Harry Morgan (portrayed by Christian Slater).

Michael C Hall will return as the infamous serial killer in the series which premieres on Paramount+ on December 13.

As for the big screen, Dempsey most recently starred in the Formula 1 drama Ferrari alongside Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz.

There is currently no release date for The Household Guide to Dying.

Grey's Anatomy season 21 airs on Thursdays at 10pm ET on ABC in the US. Previous seasons are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
