Orlando Bloom has addressed the possibility of returning to The Lord of the Rings franchise for the upcoming films.

It was announced earlier this year that the franchise would return with The Hunt for Gollum and a currently unnamed project, with Andy Serkis – and potentially others – set to reprise their roles as iconic characters.

Bloom – who played Legolas in Peter Jackson’s live-action trilogy – is the latest star to address the potential of a return, with the actor not ruling out the prospect of reprising his role as the skilful Elf.

“Oh, man, those things are amazing,” he told Variety. “Yeah. I don’t know how they’d do it. I guess with AI you can do anything these days. But, if Pete [Peter Jackson] says jump, I say, ‘how high?’ I mean, he started my whole career. I really don’t know what [they are planning].

“I did speak to Andy [Serkis], and he did say they were thinking about how to do things. I was like, ‘How would that even work?’ And he was like, ‘Well, AI!’ and I was like, ‘Oh, OK!’ It was a pretty magical time in my life, and it’s one of those things where there’s not a downside to it.”

Bloom isn’t the only Lord of the Rings star to speak about the upcoming films. Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf, recently shared that his character would feature – though he wasn’t sure if he would be the one playing him.

“I've just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved, and they hope that I'll be playing him,” the legendary actor shared. “When? I don't know. What the script is? It's not written yet. So they better be quick!”

Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in Jackson's trilogy, also commented on the prospect of returning, sharing: “It would be pretty incredible [to return]. I have to say, any return to New Zealand to work with those individuals... it would be awesome.”

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is released in cinemas on December 13. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released in 2026.
