The District 9 and Elysium filmmaker took to his Instagram feed to publish images from the project.
Blomkamp revealed that he was working separately from studio 20th Century Fox to develop the Alien movie, with the film now unlikely to ever see the light of day.
"This has nothing to do with the studio. I just feel like I might do something else instead. In which case why not show some work," he wrote on Twitter. "They didn't really even know I was working on it."
The images show renderings of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley and Michael Biehn's Aliens character Hicks, hinting that Blomkamp wanted to continue the story of James Cameron's 1986 sequel.
The artwork also includes renderings of a Xenomorph, the wreckage of a Space Jockey ship and - in an image dated March 3, 2014 - Ripley suited up in alien-like pilot gear.
Ridley Scott returned to the world of Alien with 2012's Prometheus, which was met with a mixed reaction from fans. A sequel is currently in the works, but Weaver and the iconic Xenomorph alien are not expected to feature.
Blomkamp's new movie Chappie will be released this March.
