A Quiet Place: Day One creeps into cinemas this week, and we finally have the first reactions to the horror prequel.

The new movie takes us back to the first day of the alien invasion, briefly seen at the start of A Quiet Place Part II, as Sam (Lupita Nyong'o) attempts to escape the terrifying aliens in New York City.

Those lucky few to have already seen A Quiet Place: Day One have now taken to Twitter to share their first reactions to the movie – and the early word has been mostly positive.

"I loved the first two films, their sky-high tension and their more contained settings, but I also love an epic big city disaster film. Day One delivers that while making the most of the franchise's core concept and keeping the series character-first," praised Collider's Perri Nemiroff.

Discussing Film's Andrew J Salazar said that Day One "might be my favourite of the series", adding: "What truly sets this apart is Lupita Nyong'o and director Michael Sarnoski telling a poignant story about finding inner peace, even during the apocalypse."

It's a sentiment shared by The Mary Sue's Rachel Leishman: "A Quiet Place: Day One is easily my favourite in this franchise. It's human & raw & is a story about the desperation that exists when all hope is lost & how that turns into a deep connection with each other."

What to Read Next

And it sounds like we should be emotionally prepared for the prequel. "Nyong'o gives a heartbreaking weight to her role – and the final shot will leave you BROKEN," wrote Jake Hamilton.

However, Next Best Picture's Matt Neglia said that "much of the film feels like a retread" even if it is a "bleak & extremely tense summer blockbuster", while LRMOnline's Gig Patta called the scares "predictable".

Talking to Digital Spy ahead of the release of the movie, Lupita Nyong'o revealed that she had to go through "cat therapy" to prepare for filming throughout with a cat as a co-star.

A Quiet Place: Day One is released in UK cinemas on June 27 and in US cinemas on June 28.
