Chris Hemsworth has explained how happy he is to have sat out Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga's 78-day shoot for a single action sequence.

The Thor actor is no stranger to action films and stunts, but he was relieved to hear that his character Dementus wasn't a part of the prequel film's The Stowaway from Nowhere sequence. In the film, the sequence consists of 197 shots and lasts 15 minutes, and it took nearly 80 days to film over nine months.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Hemsworth explained that he had no qualms leaving the sequence to his co-stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa) and Tom Burke (Praetorian Jack).

"After coming from the Extraction world, doing 30-minute oners [one-take scenes] and 3,000 moves of choreography and just destroying my back, and my legs and getting beat up, I was like, 'You guys can have it – go for it'.

"[Anya] handled it so well. She showed up every day with enthusiasm and led like a champion through that whole process and committed to it.

"The sequence, you can see it, there's an authenticity to it and a grit which is so impressive, so hats off to her and the entire stunt department."

Speaking about his character Dementus in general, Hemsworth said that playing the villain was "so much fun."

"I loved how unique the character was. I loved the fact that there was a yin and yang quality between the two," he said. "They both had glimpses of one another, and they're both products of the wasteland, both trying to survive in desperate times. One acts out with nobility, and one acts out in a far more brutal fashion.

"Speaking from Dementus's point of view, there was a real arrested development there. There was a sort of stunted growth in his maturity due to some traumatic experiences when he was younger. He's kind of just a big kid. He's just screaming out for attention. He wants to be acknowledged. He wants to be seen. He throws tantrums.

"But there's a flamboyance and a fun and an impulsiveness to him, a violent impulsiveness at times, that I found very unique and just so fun to explore."

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is released in cinemas on May 24.
