Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has set an unwanted record for the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes.

The latest entry in the series follows on from 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife, as the Spengler family team-up with the original Ghostbusters crew to face a new threat in New York City.

However, it seems the movie hasn't been the biggest hit with critics, with the film currently standing at 44% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes – making it the lowest entry in the franchise, behind 1989's Ghostbusters II (55%).

While there has been some praise for the movie's fun, other critics were less complimentary – some even suggesting it may be time to rest the franchise.

Here's what they've been saying:

Digital Spy

"The new movie is a definite improvement on Afterlife. It's less reliant on the past – although can't quite rid itself of it – and is more confident in blending the family-friendly spooks with comedy."

New York Times

"Frozen Empire is an eclectic, enjoyable barrage of nonsense – a circus act that kicks off with a Robert Frost poem and climaxes with Ray Parker Jr.’s titular synth banger."

The Independent

"Frozen Empire is a notable improvement on Afterlife – funny, silly, and a little scary, with its pockets full of hand-built doodahs and the occasional excursion into the realm of pseudo-mythology and parapsychology. You know, like the original Ghostbusters."

BBC

"As it drifts between all of their subplots and all of their emotional problems, losing momentum as it goes, Frozen Empire raises the increasingly frustrating suspicion that Kenan and Reitman couldn't choose which of their various story ideas to use, and so decided to use them all."

Screen International

"An overstuffed action-comedy that boasts a few enjoyable performances amidst a continuing struggle to keep this series relevant for younger generations."

Little White Lies

"Everything about the film is undercooked and lazy, and one is led to hope that this franchise is put back in the deep freeze for a very long time."

The Daily Telegraph

"There is a noxious undead pong emanating from this latest entry in the 1980s franchise, which is now being necromantically sustained through force of sheer commercial desperation, and nothing else."

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is out now in cinemas.
