Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is now out in cinemas, but you might be wondering whether the new Ghostbusters movie is suitable for the entire family.

The new movie sees the Spengler family back at the iconic New York City Firehouse following the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. And it's not long before Ghostbusters old and new have to team up to face a chilling new threat.

Like the previous movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has been officially rated as a 12A in the UK by the BBFC and the same 12A rating by the Irish Film Classification Office.

The 12A rating has been around since 2002, but there is still some confusion over what it exactly means. Essentially, it's a stronger version of the PG rating and one where it's left to the parents' discretion if they want to take their children to see a movie.

Anybody under the age of 12 has to be accompanied by an adult to see a 12A movie in the cinema, which technically means that anybody can see Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Whether younger viewers should is up to the parents and to help you make that decision, the BBFC releases detailed non-spoilery information to explain just why any movie has received a particular classification.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was rated 12A due to "moderate threat, horror, sex references, implied strong language", exactly the same as Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

The BBFC page for the movie then has more detailed descriptions of just what each category means. For instance, "moderate threat" refers to scenes like a "brief sight of a floating severed hand; however, there is no gory detail".

You can read the entire breakdown of what Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire contains on the BBFC website, but fear not, nothing will be spoiled about the movie.

In the US, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has been rated a PG-13 which is slightly different to a 12A in the UK and Ireland. It means that parental guidance is advised, but children under 13 don't need to be accompanied by an adult.
