The Kick-Ass 3 film will only be greenlit if Kick-Ass 2 proves a success, Mark Millar has revealed.

The third film in the low-budget comic book series - which was assumed to be a sure thing by many - will not be confirmed until the first sequel arrives in cinemas.

"A third and final Kick-Ass movie obviously dependent on how many billions the second one makes," wrote Millar on Twitter. "We'll know Monday after release."

Millar created the property, which centres around 'real life' superhero Dave Lizewski, with veteran artist John Romita Jr in 2008.

The writer's Secret Service, Nemesis and Supercrooks are all in development as films.
