The Hangover's Todd Phillips has dismissed criticisms of the second movie.

The director of the hit series said that it was "annoying" to read reviews which branded The Hangover II 'lazy' or 'repetitive', adding that the sequel was "better" than the first.

Speaking to Empire, the star - who also co-wrote the second and third film - said: "Not to be immodest, but comedically we did some brilliant things in that movie.

"Yes we do a wake-up and a blackout, but every joke in Hangover II is completely different.

"My feeling is it's the better movie of the two."

The second film from the franchise made over $100 million (£64m) more at the box office than The Hangover, however Phillips did add that the tone of the third movie will be much darker than the previous two.

The third film will be the last in the series, with Phillips stating "there's not going to be a fourth one".
