The Old Guard sequel has received an update on its release.

Fans have been waiting for news for a while and now, finally, one of the stars has given some insight.

Matthias Schoenaerts, who played Booker in The Old Guard, said in an interview with Collider: "We shot it approximately a year and a half ago, and I think they’re hitting the last stage of post-production.

"As far as I've understood, I think there's been a switch at Netflix high up. I think there's a different CEO, so that leads to a reconsidering of release, and how and when, and that's not up to me. I don’t know."

He continued: "But I know we’re hitting the last stage of post-production, so it’s gonna show up at some point."

That will be a relief for fans, who haven't heard much news about The Old Guard 2 since newcomers Uma Thurman and Henry Golding were announced as joining the cast in June 2022.

In the same interview, Schoenaerts was full of praise for the people he worked with on the movie, in particular director Victoria Mahoney.

"The people I work with there are friends of mine, so it’s always nice to work with friends and to work with a great production team and lovely director, Victoria Mahoney," he said.

"I’m very curious to see it, actually. I haven’t seen anything yet, so I’m curious," he added. The film wasn't on Netflix's official slate for 2024, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't come out this year.

The original movie was based on a series of comic books and quickly became one of Netflix's most successful films, with positive reviews and praise for its gay relationship.

The Old Guard is streaming on Netflix.
