Christian Bale has been spotted debuting his new shaved head transformation, ahead of his upcoming Frankenstein movie.

The Batman actor is almost unrecognisable ahead of shooting the currently untitled film, which also stars Jessie Buckley and is directed by The Lost Daughter’s Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Bale shared brief details of his new movie with The Hollywood Reporter, while taking part in a groundbreaking ceremony in California for a new village of homes for foster children – a 16-year passion project of his.

In the interview, he said: "I’ve got to shave my head next week [for a movie]. I asked them to please let me hold off on doing that but everyone was going, ‘What’s wrong with Bale? What’s up with him?’ I said, ‘Just let me get through the groundbreaking and then I’ll be off to join you’.

"I’ll be working with the wonderful Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessie Buckley and so many talented actors in the cast. I’ve got to get busy getting on the rack, breaking my bones and eating lots of fertiliser or something to try and grow."

While the movie was originally being made for Netflix, it has now found a home at Warner Bros., and is set to begin shooting in the coming weeks.

The synopsis for the film, a new take on Mary Shelley’s classic story, reads: "A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born.

"She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement."

Meanwhile, Buckley is currently starring in comedy Wicked Little Letters alongside The Lost Daughter co-star Olivia Colman, as well as Timothy Spall and Anjana Vasan.

Wicked Little Letters is released in UK cinemas on February 23.
