Madame Web has set another unwanted record as One Love outperforms it at the box office (via Variety).

The movie, which stars Dakota Johnson as psychic paramedic Cassandra Webb, has been widely criticised and is listed as one of the worst superhero movies of all time on Rotten Tomatoes.

This has been reflected in ticket sales as the suspense thriller earned $17.6 million in its opening the weekend and just $25.8 million during a six-day period.

These figures pale in comparison to Paramount's musical biopic Bob Marley: One Love, which opened with an impressive $27.7 million and $51 million during the same six days.

"We've blown through expectations, and I think we're going to continue to do so," said Paramount's president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson. "It speaks volumes about the appeal of the story and Bob Marley's music."

Ticket sales for Madame Web are especially disappointing when taking into account that the movie cost $80 million to produce and tens of millions to further promote.

Spy thriller Argylle, animated comedy Migration and Wonka rounded out the rest of the top five box office slots.

Despite the poor reception, Madame Web star Johnson recently told Digital Spy that she would consider reprising her role in a potential sequel, saying: "There is so much I would like to look at. If they want me to come back, then I will."

Johnson also admitted she didn't think a superhero project was ever on the cards for her.

"I never saw myself doing a superhero movie," she revealed "but I really love the idea of a superhero being a young woman whose power was her mind and her intellect. I find that really powerful."

Madame Web is out now in cinemas.
