The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has revealed a key moment in the film was improvised by lead actors Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris.

The upcoming Marvel outing sees Larson's Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel team up with Parris's grown-up Monica Rambeau, introduced in Disney+'s WandaVision, and Kamala Khan aka Ms Marvel, played by Iman Vellani.

Ahead of the film hitting cinemas this week, DaCosta sat down with Digital Spy, explaining how the cast was able to "find some deeper intimacy" improvising on set.

"There is a pretty intensely emotional scene between Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau in the film," DaCosta explained. "Because they have to confront what we saw in WandaVision."

"So we were rehearsing, improvising stuff and there were really beautiful, heart-rendering things that they were able to create and say to each other that ended in the final film, and that I am very proud of," she continued.

While the Candyman director couldn't divulge details of what the scene entails, she does think "it's really great", leaving Marvel fans to experience it for themselves once the film is released.

DaCosta also weighed in on the film's superhero trio, saying Larson, Parris and Vellani "mirror their characters in the movie".

"Iman is like the young, enthusiastic, super Marvel fan. Brie is like the old hardened, she's done a couple of movies already, she's been around the block," the filmmaker said.

"And Teyonah is this really erudite, specific, focused, funny person.

"So they kind of mirror their characters, and it was very fun to see them all together for the first time, to rehearse with them, and to figure out the dynamics that we set."

The Marvels is released in cinemas on November 10.
