Aquaman actor Jason Momoa will reprise his titular role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom later this year, but it looks like he might also play a different DC character in the future.

The upcoming sequel is the last of the DC Extended Universe before a new shared universe begins under James Gunn and Peter Safran, although there are a couple of actors who will continue to play their characters.

A new report from Variety claims Momoa has "engaged in talks" to play Lobo, a leather-clad motorbike-loving alien bounty bunter, in Gunn and Safran's new series of films.

The report states Momoa will either be introduced as Lobo in 2025's Superman: Legacy or in a standalone film.

Momoa was rumoured to be playing Lobo last year, with Safran stating in January: "Jason always saw Aquaman as a trilogy" while Gunn said: "We won’t have an actor playing two different roles."

The actor himself added: "We have a special relationship… I wish I could say more. I'll always be Aquaman, and there's a lot of evolution for that. So I'm not going anywhere, and it's very exciting."

The wording from all three is quite vague, but if industry rumours about Momoa/Lobo talks are continuing, and now referencing active talks, it looks like Momoa will be playing only one DC role in the new continuity, and it won't be Aquaman.

It's all kind of messy, but Gunn is fine with that. He recently stated: "It's a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it's okay to be confused on what's happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet."

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom currently has a release date of December 25, 2023 in the US and December 29, 2023 in the UK.
