Fair Play spoilers follow.

Bridgerton actress Phoebe Dynevor has spoken about why Fair Play's period sex scene is so important.

The film focuses on a couple named Emily (Dynevor) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich), who work together in the competitive world of hedge funds but keep their relationship a secret, which leads to things getting very dark indeed.

The film opens with the couple at a wedding, having snuck off to have a hook-up. With it being Emily's time of the month, period blood gets on her dress and over Luke's mouth. It isn't treated like a big deal, which is what makes it a big deal.

Speaking to Elle, Dynevor explained that treating it as a matter of fact is something that would only happen with a female director, and that a male director would think it was shocking or disgusting.

"'Why would we do that? That's not sexy' – that's what they would think," the actress explains.

"But it draws you in and you know that this isn't going to be your average film. When you see a film like this, it really pushes you to want to create more and put more female influence out into the world.

"We as women know these things happen all the time, but why are we not seeing it on our screens?"

Looking at the rest of the film, Dynevor compared the way Emily acts to how she used to in real life, stating: "Emily is really trying to make herself small to make him feel masculine.

"And I saw so much of myself in her for that reason – really going above and beyond to protect his fragile ego. But I'm getting toward 30 now and the opposite is happening, where I'm trying not to do that anymore, and it's a very nice feeling."

Fair Play is available to stream on Netflix now.
