Talk 2 Me has been officially confirmed after the success of Talk to Me and, yes, that is genuinely the current title for the horror sequel.
A24 confirmed the Talk to Me sequel on August 8, 2023, which shouldn't come as a surprise given that the first movie is the distributor's highest-grossing horror movie of all time at the US box office.
Talk 2 Me will again be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, with Danny writing the sequel with Bill Hinzman, the same trio that made the first movie such a success. (Although you might not be aware it was based on an idea from Bluey producer Daley Pearson.)
But what can we expect from the return of the most terrifying hand in cinema? Here's all you need to know about Talk 2 Me.
Talk 2 Me potential release date: When can we expect Talk to Me 2?
Although it has been confirmed, we don't yet have an official release date for Talk 2 Me.
The sequel might be affected by the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes in Hollywood as even though the first movie was an Australian production, the sequel will likely be a US co-production with A24 on board from the start.
What to Read Next
It means if they want to use any SAG-AFTRA members in the cast, then the sequel will need an interim agreement to be allowed into production, assuming that the strike is still ongoing.
There's a chance we could see the sequel in 2024, but we have a feeling we'll have to wait until at least 2025. Watch this space and we'll update whenever we hear more news.
Talk 2 Me cast: Who's coming back for Talk to Me 2?
Right now, it's unclear whether Talk 2 Me will be a direct follow-up to the first movie or focus on a new set of characters as there's been no official cast announcement.
If it is a continuation of the first movie, then we could see the likes of Alexandra Jensen and Joe Bird back as Jade and her brother Riley, respectively, as well as Miranda Otto as their mother Sue.
Given that she died at the end of the first movie, you could potentially rule out Sophie Wilde returning as Mia. However, she's now able to be contacted via the embalmed hand, so maybe there's a chance for a comeback.
Zoe Terakes and Chris Alosio could also be back as Hayley and Joss, who brought the embalmed hand to Mia's attention in the first place.
Equally, though, the sequel could choose to turn things into a Final Destination-esque series that centres on a brand-new set of characters, with the embalmed hand as the only connective tissue.
"Because I was writing it for so long and we were redrafting and redrafting, you just can't help but start writing other scenes, scenes of different people experiencing the hands, continuing on these characters' story," Danny told Deadline about a potential sequel ahead of its confirmation.
Perhaps they've now decided which direction to take it, but we just don't know for sure yet.
Talk 2 Me plot: What's Talk to Me 2 about?
We don't yet have an official synopsis for Talk 2 Me and, as mentioned above, we don't know if it'll continue the first movie.
If it does, the sequel might delve into the origins of the hand a bit more, exploring the character of Duckett who we saw die by suicide as a result of the hand in the horrifying cold open to Talk to Me.
Danny and Michael Philippou have already filmed some scenes with Duckett "told entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media" (via The Hollywood Reporter).
It was intended to be released as stealth marketing for the first movie, but kept getting removed due to violent content.
Those scenes could be repurposed for the sequel which could also delve more into the origins of the hand. Where the hand came from was left pleasingly ambiguous in the first movie, but the filmmakers do have the answer.
"The really fun part was doing our mythology bible, which breaks down every spirit that the kids connected with, why they're connecting with them, all the people that have had the hand, where the hand came from, what the actual rules are," Danny told Deadline.
Don't forget, there's also the other hand out there somewhere in the world. Maybe it's the hand that Mia holds at the end in Greece, a storyline that could be picked up in the sequel.
Talk 2 Me trailer: Any Talk to Me 2 footage yet?
Unfortunately, we can't summon up a trailer like the hand can summon up a spirit as Talk 2 Me has yet to start filming.
But with Talk to Me now out on digital, you can at least rewatch the first movie while you wait for the first footage from the sequel.
Talk 2 Me does not yet have a release date. Talk to Me is available to rent in the UK from Prime Video, iTunes and Altitude.Film.
