Blue Beetle 2 has yet to be confirmed by Warner Bros., but there are big plans ahead for Xolo Maridueña's new DC hero.
Before Blue Beetle's release, director Ángel Manuel Soto told Total Film that he viewed the first movie as the start of a trilogy. "Our first movie, the way we wanted to do it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least," he explained.
"And taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first movie to practically be the first act of a saga."
If you think that sounds unlikely due to the incoming new DC Universe, don't worry because DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn previously called Blue Beetle the "first DCU character", even if the movie itself isn't part of the universe.
That means we can be hopeful that Blue Beetle 2 will happen, so with that in mind, here's everything you need to know about the potential sequel.
(Be warned, Blue Beetle spoilers follow.)
What to Read Next
Blue Beetle 2 potential release date: When can we expect Blue Beetle 2?
As mentioned above, Blue Beetle 2 hasn't been officially announced yet so we don't have a confirmed release date.
The sequel wasn't part of the initial slate announced by Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran in January 2023, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. Given the ongoing strikes though, development of the sequel won't be possible anytime soon.
There are only four DC movies with confirmed release dates: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 20, 2023), Joker: Folie à Deux (October 4, 2024), Superman: Legacy (July 11, 2025) and The Batman Part II (October 3, 2025).
Superman: Legacy is considered the first movie of the DCU so it's likely we'll have to wait until after that for Blue Beetle 2.
When we hear any more concrete information about the sequel, we'll update this page.
Blue Beetle 2 cast: Who's coming back for Blue Beetle 2?
We don't have a confirmed cast for Blue Beetle 2 yet, but Xolo Maridueña will absolutely be back as Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle.
He's sure to be joined by his family so that means returns for Adriana Barraza as Jaime's Nana, George Lopez as Jaime's uncle Rudy, Elpidia Carrillo as Jaime's mother Rocio and Belissa Escobedo as Jaime's sister Milagro.
Unfortunately, it's unlikely that Damián Alcázar will return as Jaime's father Alberto as he sadly dies of a heart attack during the first movie. He does make a return in a vision to Jaime after his death, so don't rule out a similar appearance in the sequel.
Bruna Marquezine will also return as Jaime's love interest Jenny Kord, who now runs Kord Industries, while Becky G will be back to voice Khaji-Da, the entity that controls the Scarab which gives Jaime his powers.
Susan Sarandon and Raoul Max Trujillo won't be back as Victoria Kord and Carapax, respectively, as they both die during the first movie's finale.
As well as a villain role to be filled for the sequel, we'll also have to wait and see who gets to play Jenny's father Ted Kord. The mid-credit scene revealed that he's still alive, so we can expect to see him in the sequel.
Blue Beetle 2 plot: How does Blue Beetle set up a sequel?
The first movie is largely a self-contained origin story for Jaime Reyes which sees him become one with Khaji-Da, while also defeating the threat against him and his family from Victoria Kord.
However, there is one dangling plot point that's sure to be picked up in the sequel involving Jenny's father Ted Kord. He's revealed in the mid-credit scene to be alive, having been missing for years, but there's no information on where he is.
The news comes from a message on his old computer which Jenny restarted earlier in the movie when she was looking into the Scarab's history with Jaime and Rudy. Whoever is delivering the message (and it might be Ted) wants Jenny to know "her dad is alive".
It probably won't be the main plot thread of the sequel, but it's definitely something that will be picked up if Blue Beetle 2 happens.
We could also start to see Blue Beetle crossover with the wider DC Universe.
"We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future instalments of the DCU," Soto told Total Film in June 2023.
