Superman: Legacy has added Barry star Anthony Carrigan to its cast.

Carrigan, who has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award three times for his portrayal of NoHo Hank in the HBO dramedy series, has been cast by writer/director James Gunn as DC Comics hero Metamorpho (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Metamorpho is the heroic alter-ego of adventurer Rex Mason, whose entire molecular structure was changed due to a curse from an ancient artefact.

Originally created by DC's Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon in 1965, Metamorpho possesses superhuman durability and the powers of elemental transmutation. He has been associated with superhero teams the Justice League and the Outsiders.

Sharing the casting news on his Threads account, Gunn wrote: "I am unbelievably excited for Metamorpho (and this opportunity to work with Anthony Carrigan.)"

Carrigan is no stranger to the DC Universe, as he previously played the Batman villain Victor Zsasz in the Fox series Gotham. He also played the supervillain Mist in The Flash TV series.

What to Read Next

The Politician's David Corenswet and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's Rachel Brosnahan will lead Gunn's cinematic reintroduction of the Man of Steel, playing Clark Kent / Superman and Lois Lane, respectively.

Earlier this week, Gunn confirmed that Nathan Fillion would be swapping DC roles after previously playing TDK (The Detachable Kid) in The Suicide Squad. Fillion has joined Superman: Legacy as the Green Lantern Corps' notorious hothead Guy Gardner.

Other Superman: Legacy cast members include Twilight star Edi Gathegim as the technical wiz Mr Terrific and Dora and the Lost City of Gold's Isabela Merced as Thanagarian warrior Hawkgirl.

The upcoming movie won't be an origin story for the Man of Steel, as Gunn has argued fans have already seen that story told many times. The filmmaker's stance on Superman's origin may not surprise fans since he recently criticised the superhero genre for being too formulaic.

Superman: Legacy will debut in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
