The Flash 2 potential release date, cast and everything you need to know

The Flash 2 has yet to be confirmed by Warner Bros and with DC's new universe starting in 2025, the future is unclear for Ezra Miller's superhero.

Miller made their first public appearance for nearly two years at the world premiere of The Flash on June 12, 2023. In summer 2022, Miller announced they were seeking treatment for "complex mental health issues", following a series of controversies involving the actor.

It's unclear whether they'll reprise the role, but new DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran said in January 2023 that no decisions have been made.

"Ezra is fully committed to the recovery right now. And, you know, we talk to them. We're in constant contact [and] when the time is right, we'll have the conversation with them and decide what's best for them personally," Safran noted.

But while Miller's future might be unclear, it was revealed in June 2023 that there already is a finished script for a sequel to The Flash. Whether it'll actually happen remains to be seen though.

So as we wait for any further news one way or the other, here's everything you need to know about The Flash 2.

Will The Flash 2 happen?

As mentioned above, The Flash 2 has yet to be confirmed and right now, we have a feeling that it's unlikely to happen, unless the first movie proves to be a huge box-office success.

It's possible that Gunn and Safran's new DC universe could exist concurrently with the former universe, with The Flash and other Worlds of DC movies (like Aquaman) existing in a separate timeline like Joker and The Batman.

However, it would be a cleaner break from the past story-wise if it's the case that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom proved to be the final outing for the former DC universe, even if the universe could technically continue and not impact the main timeline of the new universe.

There's already been controversy over the decision for Warner Bros to release The Flash following the various controversies involving Miller, especially since they decided to completely cancel Batgirl which had already been filmed.

The reality is that The Flash was always going to get released, but it becomes a different conversation entirely if Warner Bros choose to confirm a sequel and if that sequel brings back Miller in the central role.

So not only would it make more sense continuity-wise for The Flash 2 not to happen, it would also help Warner Bros avoid any backlash from fans if The Flash ends up only being a standalone movie.

Of course, money talks so if The Flash is a big success, then it's possible that a sequel ends up feeling inevitable. Right now though, it feels unlikely that The Flash 2 happens.

The Flash 2 potential release date: When can we expect The Flash 2?

It won't be a surprise to learn that The Flash 2 doesn't yet have a confirmed release date and even if it does happen, it likely won't happen for a while.

The new DC universe kicks off movies-wise with Superman: Legacy on July 11, 2025 and there are other already-confirmed movies, including Batman film The Brave and the Bold, that have yet to receive a release date.

We'd assume that the movies announced at the slate presentation in January 2023 by Gunn and Safran would take priority, so it could be 2026 or later that we see The Flash 2 if it does get announced.

The Flash 2 cast: Who will be back for The Flash 2?

Given that it hasn't been announced, there aren't any confirmed cast returns for The Flash 2, but you can make some educated guesses.

It's possible that with the multiverse established, we might get a different actor playing Barry Allen, aka The Flash. For director Andy Muschietti though, if he's involved in a sequel, he would bring back Miller.

"I don't think there's anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it," Muschietti told The Discourse podcast.

Miller was joined in The Flash by Michael Keaton's Batman and Sasha Calle's Supergirl and, according to Variety, the already-finished script from David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick for The Flash 2 brought back both of those characters.

They were said to be guest stars only in the script though, so perhaps their involvement would be along the same lines as they are in the first movie.

Perhaps if the sequel carries on in the same timeline as the first movie, we might get a bigger role for George Clooney after his surprise appearance as Bruce Wayne at the end of The Flash.

In the multiverse, anything is possible.

The Flash 2 plot: How does The Flash set it up?

In The Flash, Barry attempts to save his mother by rewriting the past, only to come to the realisation that doing so could lead to the collapse of the multiverse.

Barry goes back in time to change what he had already changed, leading to his mother's death. Although he can't resist changing his timeline just a bit as he ensures that his father will be seen in the CCTV footage, exonerating him from his wife's murder.

We see the potential effects of this slight timeline shift at the end of The Flash when Barry is greeted by Bruce Wayne and it's not Ben Affleck. As mentioned above, it's George Clooney, and his Bruce seems to know Barry.

It suggests that Barry is now in a slightly altered timeline where his mother is still dead, but his father is freed from jail and Batman has a different face. What other changes could there be? That's something a sequel could explore.

The Flash 2 trailer: Any footage of The Flash 2?

We don't even know if a sequel is happening yet, so there is no footage of The Flash 2 as it hasn't been confirmed, let alone started filming. Sorry about that.
