John Wick: Chapter 4 leaves us hanging with its shock ending, and delivers another ambiguous blow with its credit scene.
Unlike previous John Wick movies, the fourth movie does have a post-credit scene, so if that's all you wanted to know, then don't read on further.
The post-credit scene catches up with Akira (Rina Sawayama), daughter of Wick's friend Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), who has a score to settle with another of Wick's former allies as we see in the credit scene.
We're about to head into some major spoilers, so final warning if you haven't seen John Wick: Chapter 4 yet.
John Wick 4 credit scene explained
The post-credit scene picks up with Caine (Donnie Yen) in Paris, an unspecified amount of time after his duel with Wick.
As we saw earlier in the movie, Caine likes to listen to his daughter playing music and he's on his way to give her some flowers. However, coming to meet him before he gets there is Akira and she preps her switchblade as she nears Caine when the scene ends.
What to Read Next
It was Caine who killed Akira's father at the Osaka Continental and Akira had made Wick effectively promise to kill Caine in retaliation. Wick spared Caine's life during their duel, saving his final bullet to kill the Marquis (Bill Skarsgård) instead.
So Akira has clearly decided to take matters into her own hands and avenge her father's death instead. Whether she manages to actually kill Caine remains to be seen as he's shown to be a formidable opponent during the movie.
Since the movie's release, director Chad Stahelski has explained that there was an alternate version of the scene that revealed Akira did manage to avenge her father's death by killing Caine.
"It's funny, we shot that, there's a real scene that goes along, like Donnie coming up, you think he's got it, and then Rina goes and gets him, and then there's this whole death scene with Donnie Yen dying," Stahelski said.
"We had a whole thing where you actually see the demise. But we watched it and I kind of felt like, 'Well, that's not as cool as not knowing'."
Luckily, they went with the version we saw, which does technically leave open the chance of Caine and, most likely, Akira returning in future.
Of all the characters introduced to the Wick-niverse in Chapter 4, Akira feels the likeliest to return either in a potential John Wick 5 or in her own spin-off movie (probably dependent on how well the Ana de Armas spin-off Ballerina does).
Akira also blames Wick for her father's death so if she did manage to kill Caine (as suggested in the alternate scene), it's possible she'll come after Wick too – assuming that he is actually still alive – which could form a part of the fifth movie's plot.
Equally, this post-credit scene might just be a full stop for Akira and included solely to tie up a loose end from the movie. Hopefully though, it's a sign of more Akira to come in John Wick's future.
After all, there's never been a John Wick credit scene until now, so clearly Akira is important.
