The Mummy's Brendan Fraser surprised and delighted London cinema-goers when he rocked up to say hi to fans watching a screening of his classic movie.

A host for the evening at The Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square welcomed fans to the showing before introducing man-of-the-moment and potential Oscar-winner Fraser, who starred as Rick O'Connell in three The Mummy movies.

"Prince Charles Cinema audience, please could you give the warmest and loveliest welcome to Mr Rick O’Connell himself, Brendan Fraser," said the host.

The crowd went wild as Fraser made his way to the stage and received a standing ovation from the audience. Fraser stood there humbly as the applause and cheers continued before he thanked the fans for their rapturous welcome.

Fraser wore an outfit that very much resembled the attire of his character, Rick, from The Mummy.

“Friday night, Leicester Square. I first started seeing films right across the street. I saw Star Wars in 1977 and it changed my life. It made me want to be in the movies. And I’m proud to stand before you tonight because this is a film that was made in Britain, you should know that."

"It was at Shepperton and we shot it in Morocco. Even the second one, too. Be proud. Thank you for being here. We had no idea what kind of movie we were making when we shot this," Fraser said.

"We didn’t know if it was a drama or a comedy or a straight-ahead action or romance, a horror picture, more action, all of the above. No idea until it tested in front of British audiences. Thank you for that.

Fraser then asked the crowd if anyone hadn’t actually seen the movie yet, before shouting, “Outstanding!” when somebody raised their hand.

"Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr. Enjoy them all. I won’t take up any more of your time," Fraser said.

"Have a great night. If you get a chance, check out The Whale on February 3. Thank you! Good night!"

The Whale is his new movie, and part of Fraser's renaissance at the moment. That role is likely to earn him an Oscar nomination — perhaps even a win.

Recently, Fraser won a Critics Choice award for his performance in the movie and tearfully accepted the prize in a moving speech that could prelude an even bigger win come Oscar night in March. Prince Charles cinema-goers will certainly hope so.

The Whale will be released in the UK on February 3.
