Bad news for horror fans... the odds of getting a third Happy Death Day are looking very, very low.

Writer and director Christopher Landon has shared his honest insight into its development, and admitted that despite fan interest it's very much on the back bench at Universal.

Despite the popularity and good reviews (here's ours) for the franchise, it turns out that the second instalment just didn't make enough money for a third to look attractive.

When asked about lucky number 3, Landon revealed to Slashfilm that there was: "No movement at all, sadly. There was a tiny moment where I really felt like I had Universal's attention, but they forgot about me," he said laughingly.

"I think it's a really tough one for them, and I'm being really blunt and honest in that the first movie was very successful. It made a lot of money. It was well-received. And the sequel was not.

"The sequel is loved by people who have seen it, but it did not make a lot of money, and it was not a success for them. So it's very hard to motivate them to make a third movie when the last one just didn't perform. Those are the hard economics of the business."

He also spoke about how fans have kept up hope and support for a sequel, explaining that there's still an audience in wait: "What's funny is that every time Jason Blum is on Twitter and he talks about projects they're doing and whatnot, there's inevitably, there's always at least a few people who say: 'But what about Happy Death Day 3?' So there are a lot of people out there who want the movie, but I just think it isn't enough."

Jason Blum, who produced the two former films, is well versed in horror if he does manage to get the project back on track. Having recently co-produced immediate cult classic M3GAN, however, it looks like he's got plenty of other hits on his plate for now.

And, Landon himself is keeping busy, with his latest movie We Have a Ghost set to air next month.

We Have A Ghost has a release date of February 24, streaming on Netflix.
