First look at James Cameron's attempts to prove Jack couldn't survive Titanic

Titanic fans have been speculating over whether Jack's death was needless ever since 1997, and now, 25 years later, the movie's director James Cameron is delving into the practicalities to unearth if there really was any alternative.

New footage from Titanic: 25 Years Later with James Cameron shows the director running a scientific experiment to prove, once and for all, that Jack could not have made it out alive.

In the clip, Cameron narrates: "So now, let's do the real test. Let's put them through a simulation of all the things that Jack and Rose went through. So we did exactly what they did in the movie exceptt that we doubled the time for every stage of it because our water wasn't as cold."

It's shown that the director and his team went to great lengths to make everything as accurate as possible, even going so far as to dress the stunt people in similar clothing and have them say their character's lines.

Cameron explains the impact of cold water on the body and heart, and shows how the Jack double was able to fit onto the raft. But, with his body immediately reacting dramatically to the cold, things aren't looking too good.

The teaser ends there, with two people successfully on the raft, but it looks as though things are about to take a turn for the worse as Jack's stunt double is seen shaking uncontrollably.

At the end of last year when announcing the special, Cameron stated very clearly: "We took two stunt people who were the same body mass of Kate and Leo and we put sensors all over them and inside them.

"We put them in ice water and tested to see whether they could have survived through a variety of methods and the answer was [that] only one could survive."

We'll have to wait until February to watch the entire experiment, but up until then Cameron's water-themed genius is still in full swing, with Avatar: The Way of Water still in cinemas.
