The Lord of the Rings actor Andy Serkis has opened up about his upcoming villain role in the upcoming Luther movie, as a first look at the ominous character arrives.
Luther: The Fallen Sun is the feature-length movie adaptation of the acclaimed BBC detective series starring Idris Elba as the titular character.
And for such a notable project, the team behind the picture wanted a first-class actor for their villain — and they landed it in Andor actor Serkis, who has teased in an interview with Total Film that the role is one of the darkest he has ever undertaken.
"When I first read the script, I almost wanted to throw it in the bin and have a shower," Serkis said.
"I don’t think I’ve come across anything quite as dark for a long time. And I thought: ‘In fact, do I really actually at this point in the world and time and my life, want to go down this particular rabbit hole of something that’s so hard to fathom in humanity?'"
Serkis plays millionaire David Robey, who will reportedly tap into society's fears of technology being used to spy on people. Meanwhile, the dangers of the dark web will also be explored.

The movie will undoubtedly show Serkis's range as an actor once again, after he recently starred in the lighter fare of Star Wars' Andor. He broke down his character's final moments in an interview at the tail end of last year.
"I think that moment of pathos probably was the way to go. It was a really explorative scene to do, and especially for me, for my character," Serkis said.
"But it was an amazing scene to shoot with everybody diving off, and jumping to freedom, and just this sort of sense of vertigo, and fear, and phobia of war. Yeah, it was an interesting layer, a very interesting layer to play."
Luther: The Fallen Sun will stream on Netflix from March 2023, while all five seasons are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
