Anne Hathaway has played down the chances of a Devil Wears Prada sequel.

Hathaway played Andy, a young graduate who ends up becoming an assistant to ruthless magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) in the 2006 movie.

Speaking on The View, the actress said she thinks a sequel is unlikely to happen due to changes in the media industry.

"I just think that movie was in a different era," she said. "Now everything's gone so digital and that movie is centered around the concept of producing a physical thing and it's just, it's just very different."

However, Hathaway is still intrigued to find out what the characters would be up to in the current day – even if she thinks a sequel is unlikely.

"It is tempting to think about Andy and Emily needing to get Miranda her coffee and she's somewhere in Europe," she added.

"And then along the way they pick up Stanley Tucci in Italy, who's at a restaurant. It's tempting but I don't think it's going to happen."

Hathaway instead proposed a "relaunch" rather than a direct sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, with a different cast – although the idea of wasn't popular with The View's panel, who seemed more in favour of the original cast reuniting.

There is already a re-imagined version of the Devil Wears Prada in musical form, which premiered in the summer of 2022 after a number of delays.

Sir Elton John – who is no stranger to musical adaptations including The Lion King, Aida and Billy Elliott – composed the musical.

The story has also been reimagined for the stage, incorporating from both the film and Lauren Weisberger's novel.
