Halloween Ends director David Gordon Green has defended Halloween Kills after receiving a negative response for the film.

In an interview with SFX Magazine as a part of their Halloween Horror Special, the director stood by his movie and reiterated that it was exactly the kind of movie he had set out to make.

"Kills was 100% the movie I wanted to make, and I'm extremely proud of its kind of insanity," he said.

"To me, psychologically, the whole point of that movie is kind of unravelling things and not resolving things. There's a lot of people that when they see an ending like that, or that kind of unresolved chaos, they get frustrated as a moviegoer," he explained.

"For me, that's just part of the fun, and then we get to come in and tidy it up with the last one. So any frustration that was expressed about the last one, I kind of just smile and say, 'Hold tight, here we come,'" he added.

Halloween Kills was a certifiable box office dud as neither fans nor critics were too fond of the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently sits on a score of 39%.

At the time of its release last year, the film faced mostly negative reviews from critics, with the Hollywood Reporter leading with this scathing review: "'Evil dies tonight,' shout the inflamed townsfolk of Haddonfield, Illinois, more times than you can count in Halloween Kills. Or maybe it's 'A franchise dies tonight'? I might have misheard. Either way, this latest installment is like a latex ghoul mask so stretched and shapeless it no longer fits."

Halloween Kills sees the return of Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, who is desperate to outrun serial killer Michael Myers, who somehow survived being burned alive in the previous film. Halloween Ends is released this month.

You can grab the SFX Halloween Horror Special magazine on October 5. Halloween Ends is released in cinemas on October 14.
